This was a BMW that I worked on with my son

It was a fun project but he is headed to college and I have too many cars. This is a great car that turns heads and gets compliments and honks when I drive. It is in amazing shape with majority of restoration complete. There are maybe a few more things I would do but this thing is beautiful and ready for a new owner. Looking at the list below you will quickly see that I have more in this than I can hope to get out. My loss someone else’s gain.

The Good. We did a long list of upgrades:

  • new brakes
  • new tires
  • timing belt
  • starter
  • replaced all belts, and hoses
  • A/C, converted to modern era. Works well and blows cold
  • new convertible top ~$1,500
  • new headlights, installed smileys
  • complete modern stereo refresh but made to look classic(I am an audiophile) Blaupunkt receiver, amp, custom speaker panels. ~$4,000 in stereo work
  • custom dashboard design and rebuild by Bavarian customs. No need to worry about a bad cluster it has been restored and improved. ~$1,500. These guys do amazing work and this was a featured project for them at the time
  • Nardi wood grain steering wheel
  • coilover springs installed

Brand new restored engine. This is a big one. We took a gash to the oil pan which caused us to leak oil and lock up the original engine. I found a shop in Ca that rebuilds E-30 engines and restores them to their former glory. We purchased and installed the engine so this engine is like new and should easily do another 100K miles.

We also installed a HIK skid plate on the bottom to shield the engine from this happening again. The car sits and rides low which looks sleek but it is inevitable for it to hit something or scrape going over speed bumps. The coil overs were adjusted as well to raise the car and can be adjusted more based on new owners preferences.

The Bad:
The convertible ton has been converted to manual. Not actually a bad thing but worth acknowledging. I have the old motor still and thought about fixing but after spending hours in the forums, I realized that this is a majorly flawed design and would be a constant headache. It’s pretty easy to take down and put up.

The Ugly. Not a ton here but want to be fully transparent:

The paint is good but not great. I would give it a 7 out of 10. Some surface spots and dings. The paint is chipping by the fenders and there are a few parking lot dings. It looks great from a distance and is great for age but one of my plans was to repaint and make it show room quality. I ran out of time and money. There is a spot in the back of the passenger seat. Need to replace the back panel. They sell them all over eBay. Never bothered me enough. Rear antenna is sticking on occasion. I will send the car with lots of spare parts. Convertible screen, old headlights, old steering wheel, old BMW stereo, and more.
