This 1962 Dodge Polara 500 convertible is the seldom-seen muscle car you’ve been looking for
From the awesome color combo to the upgraded 440 Six Pack under the hood, it’s everything you want in a cut-above classic power drop-top.
This was the era when the Mopars looked like nothing else on the road. It combined the rounded styling of the revolutionary turbine cars and the square-jaw toughness that would make their upcoming muscle cars so aggressive. But there’s more here than just intimidation. The deep red has a nice luster in the sunlight, and it makes for a great backdrop for the wraparound chrome bumpers, distinctive grille, and awesomely intricate one-year-only rear end. And the red streak of the full-length trim and white convertible top are some tasteful touches of color.
Since we like the look of the red and white accent on the outside, we love the look of the two-tone red and white interior. This Polara has the size that makes it easy to share with family and friends, and it has the vintage style to impress them all. You see it everywhere from the beautifully unique steering wheels to the working courtesy lights in the rear. This has the right cruiser features like a power convertible top and an upgraded AM/FM/cassette radio. And the power driver’s bucket reminds you who’s the priority in this Dodge. There’s a large Mopar tach on the dash, a matching oil pressure readout under the dash, and a Hurst Pro-Matic 2 shifter in the center console. It’s all there to signal something extra special under the hood.
Those who know Mopars look for a few big motor Polaras that were the street kings of their day. This one upgrades that attitude. The big 440 cubic-inch V8 was still a few years away in 1962, and these never got the famous triple set of dual-barrel carbs. But this one rectified it with the big motor and a Six Pack on top. The air grabber proudly announces this in the tidy engine bay, and so it’s easy to show off this almighty powerhouse. It fires up with a sweet rumble as long tube headers feed the dual exhaust. And when you want to really let the big block growl, a set of cutouts bypass the mufflers. The stout A727 Torqueflite three-speed automatic transmission knows how to handle the power while delivering smooth shifts. And power steering, power brakes, and wide BF Goodrich T/As on upgraded Torq Thrust wheels make this muscle Mopar an all-around solid cruiser.
This Dodge has distinction… and there’s rarity in that, too, with Chevy making about twelve times more Impala drop-tops than there were Polara convertibles. So when you have rarity, distinction, and power, you know it’s an irresistible classic.
